2. Waste Water Treatment System

Physical Treatment:

  • Rotating Bar Screens: Mechanically remove large debris from wastewater.
  • Grit Removal Systems: Vortex Grit Chambers or aerated grit chambers are used to remove sand, gravel, and other gritty materials.
  • Primary Clarifiers: Use gravity to settle out suspended solids; dissolved air flotation (DAF) can be used for enhanced removal of fine particles and oils.

Biological Treatment:

  • Activated Sludge Process: Aeration tanks with diffused aeration systems** supply oxygen to microorganisms that degrade organic matter.
  • Trickling Filters: Rotating biological contactors (RBCs)enhance oxygenation and microbial activity on the filter media.
  • Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs): A fill-and-draw type reactor system for biological treatment in batches.
  • Anaerobic Digesters: Break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas; upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors are commonly used for industrial wastewater.

Chemical Treatment:

Chemical Precipitation:

  • Ferric Chloride: Used to precipitate phosphorus and heavy metals.
  • Lime: Often used in tandem with coagulation for pH adjustment and phosphorus removal.

Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs):

  • Fenton’s Reagent: A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and iron salts for the oxidation of organic pollutants.
  • UV/H2O2: Combines ultraviolet light with hydrogen peroxide to generate hydroxyl radicals that oxidize pollutants.

Disinfection:

  • Chlorination: Still widely used, but can form harmful byproducts like trihalomethanes (THMs).
  • UV Disinfection: Employs ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate microorganisms without adding chemicals.

3. Water Recycling

Physical Treatment:

  • Membrane Filtration Technologies:   Microfiltration (MF): Removes particles down to 0.1 microns, including bacteria and some viruses.
  • Ultrafiltration (UF): Removes viruses, colloids, and suspended solids.
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO): Forces water through a semi-permeable membrane, removing dissolved salts, bacteria, and organic molecules.
  • Centrifugal Separators: Used for separating solids from liquids in industrial processes.

Biological Treatment:

  • Membrane Bioreactors (MBR): Combines activated sludge treatment with membrane filtration, resulting in high-quality effluent suitable for reuse.
  • Constructed Wetlands: Mimics natural wetlands to treat wastewater using plants, soil, and associated microorganisms.
  • Biological Activated Carbon (BAC): Combines adsorption and biodegradation for the treatment of water and wastewater.

Chemical Treatment:

Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs):

  • Ozonation: Used for the breakdown of complex organic pollutants and micropollutants.
  • UV/Ozone: Enhances the oxidation power of ozone with UV light, effective in breaking down complex organics.
  • Ion Exchange: Used to remove ions like heavy metals from wastewater, with applications in both industrial wastewater treatment and water recycling.
  • Electrocoagulation: A process that uses electrical currents to remove suspended solids, heavy metals, and emulsified oils from wastewater.
